Wildflowers
They were dense but more importantly, they were everywhere. And where there are flowers, there are bugs, which sometimes made it hard to see the flowers!
Flower folk like to call these very low-growers "belly flowers."  Desert Star (above) and Purple Mat (right) are two of the most plentiful. Broad-Flowered Gilia are so filmy they are nearly invisible  (below)
Manly Lake covers the bottom of Death Valley and is normally an alkali flat, Not this year, after over 6 inches of rain, a new record.
